Amped FIVE: the Complete Forensic Video Workflow for ISO17025 Accreditation
Presenter: Emiliano Polito
Many forensic video units in the UK are now either accredited or in the process of being accredited for ISO17025. Many of these units face the dilemma of validating their tools, cross-validating one tool against another and choosing the right auditing and reporting methods. Amped FIVE is the complete solution that helps to overcome the abovementioned challenges with a scientifically sound workflow that takes care of all accreditation requirements. This presentation will use case examples and will prove how Amped FIVE is the go-to tool that allows us to: • acquire and verify the integrity of video evidence • import proprietary CCTV into our workflow preserving the raw properties of the media • restore/clarify material using a non-destructive and repeatable filter workflow • annotate and compile clips together for viewing in court and • produce clear analytical/technical reports with ease and confidence
Video Evidence: Don’t Take it for Granted
Presenter: Martino Jerian
It’s widely recognized that images and videos are the most effective source of evidence, but unfortunately, they are not always treated with the same rigor and scientific approach that is applied to other forensic fields. In this presentation, we will explain why video evidence is so powerful and why it’s not always managed in the way it deserves. We will highlight the most pressing issues concerning its acquisition, processing, and analysis, that policymakers and the public should be aware of. Finally, we will present some examples and propose an approach to improve security and justice through a better scientific workflow applied to video evidence.

Too Many Proprietary Players: Video Conversion & Triage
Presenter: David Spreadborough
In many cases, you only need to get the video to play and do a few simple tasks. However, in the world of CCTV, nothing is simple! Understanding why there are issues is the first stage in finding the solutions. This informative session will break down surveillance video challenges and highlight the importance of having a forensic approach for video triage to protect both the user and the evidence.
Understanding and Explaining Video Evidence: Forensic Video Analysis
Presenter: David Spreadborough
CCTV, video, and images are the most common form of physical evidence used in investigations but their reliability is often called into question. Data interpretation, lossless conversion, enhancement, restoration, measurements, comparisons, redaction, annotation, and finally presentation must all adhere to a forensic workflow to ensure reliability. This case-based session will highlight the importance of having repeatability, reproducibility, and explainability when working with visual evidence.
Vehicle Speed Estimation From Video
Presenter: David Spreadborough
Estimating a vehicle's speed from a video can often be a tricky task. Frame timing challenges, distorted camera views, and difficult maths would often mean a very lengthy process was required. This session will highlight some of the important variables that must be identified when considering the suitability of a video for vehicle speed estimation, and the power of both visual information and data to assist in the presentation and interpretation of the results.
It’s More Than “Pushing Play”: Video Evidence Presentation Tips
Presenter: David Spreadborough
The courtroom must be able to trust what they are seeing. With allegations of malicious manipulation, poor processing, or bias becoming commonplace, it is important to remember that forensic rigor must remain consistent right up to the final presentation media. With multiple examples, this session will look at the challenges in multimedia presentation and some of the solutions available that ensure the ‘Camera to Court’ science-based workflow.

While video is more readily available to aid in investigations today (e.g. CCTV, Body-worn, social media, and cellphones), there are several questions that may be asked of a video that may not able to be answered just by hitting the "Play" button. Understanding how video from sources can affect what we when evaluating video, is crucial to any evidence, and the eye is prone to see things differently than it is recorded. This session will show why it is crucial to understand how the video played to make sure the answers we get from the images is accurate.
